We take great pride in all our communities have to offer along this beautiful stretch of midcoast Maine. The diversity of the rich cultural experiences you find here are unparalleled, whether you come for outdoor recreation, a varied selection of the arts, an exciting food environment, unique shopping, or historic treasures.
Perhaps what makes our area special is the different communities that populate the region, nestled along the beautiful Belfast Bay and Passagassawakeag River, and into the fields and hills of our beautiful county. And of course – the people who live, work, and play here. From lobstermen to farmers, business owners, to professionals of all ages, community members are united in the pride we take in our towns. How do we know? The abundance of community organizations and activities year round!
The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce and Belfast Parks & Recreation Department bring the annual Arts in the Park juried art show, a tradition along the Maine coast for local artisans. Live music and events in town, on the water, on our farms, just make the feeling of community that much more fun. Maine Celtic Celebration, Belfast Harbor Fest, Belfast Summer Nights, the Holy Mackerel Fishing Tournament, Fiber College Touchstone Retreats, Maine Wienerfest, Holiday on the Harbor… an endless amount of things to see and do, just to name a few!
For a young family, the yellow school buses wind their way down our lightly traveled country roads. Our elementary schools and high schools offer the opportunity to learn, grow, play and the university system is world-class. Our communities offer safe playgrounds and plenty of room for outdoor exploration.
Our local middle school is renowned for its innovative greenhouse program that teaches students about botany and more while stocking the school kitchen with fresh veggies. Mainers also take great pride in supporting local merchants through local co-ops and farmers’ markets.
If retiring to Maine is part of your plan, take a good look at Waldo County and Belfast, a walking-friendly city. The surrounding communities are top-notch for an active retirement. We have a great local hospital, Waldo County General Hospital, and an array of retirement communities and support services.
Be sure to check out our Senior College! Life-long learning is part of daily life. Our YMCA also offers active senior excursions and day trips.
